1. Specific: You need to get clear about your goal and its outcome. Getting specific brings clarity, precision, execution, resulting in achievable outcomes.
2. Measurable: Is a tool that allows you to measure your goal e.g. City to Surf - if you want to walk/run 6 kilometres in an hour then you would need to know that your pace needs to be at one 1 kilometre per 10 minute intervals
3. Achievable: Is it achievable for you? Will you be able to work or commit yourself to achieve this outcome
4. Realistic: Be realistic about what you are setting up for yourself. It is far better to achieve something that has been specifically orientated, is measurable, realistic and achievable, than it is to set ourselves up with unrealistic attainability. After all you can always expand your goal further once steps 1 – 4 have been achieved
5. Tangible: Firstly can you visualise the outcome, then than you feel this outcome within yourself. Are you then able to hold this visualisation in your minds eye as this is a major key to making it happen (tangible)
6. Inspirational: Allows for you to be creative with your goal. Allows for you to aim for a level that stretches yourself. Allows you to tap into your passion underlying your goal and live these feelings of passion from within, supporting you until your goal is achieved. To support this inspiration, you will need to see it either via a picture board or in writing as this taps into your unconscious mind allowing it to work along side your conscious mind
7. Enjoyable: Have fun as part of your plan, so that when it gets tough, the tough get going. Having a sense of humour is a key element as it allows for fun bringing an element of joy to your goal
8. Success: Visualise in your minds eye, the desired outcome from this goal working in your life. If you are using the example; City to Surf, visualise yourself, running this race – at the start, at a certain point during the race, and at the finishing line. Visualise how good this feels, the crowd, the jubilation and achievement, feel it, see it, breath it. Hold this picture of success in your minds eye at all times.
